Transforming Data into Insight with Avocado and Splunk

Case Study - Patient Allocation Matrix

About Our Client

Patient Allocation Matrix

NSW Ambulance provides healthcare services, including paramedic and rescue services. They aid 1 in 6 people in New South Wales (a population of 8.1 million) yearly.

Committed to transforming emergency response through data, NSW Ambulance has collaborated with Avocado since the Covid-19 peak in early 2020, supporting their progress with Splunk and opening avenues for exciting innovations.

The Challenge

Making the best possible use of your assets is a core priority across businesses and industries.

This was doubly true for NSW Ambulance when they engaged Avocado. At the time, the organisation faced considerable challenges in improving patient flow. Key obstacles included sub-optimal reporting and decision-making data that hindered proactive risk mitigation.

Generating visibility into crucial metrics was a priority, as the organisation saw unprecedented events unfold during COVID.

NSW Ambulance was navigating operational challenges while aligning with the overarching government strategy and striving to enhance patient flow and outcomes.

Avocado was engaged in several projects aimed at achieving these goals. Our collaboration included Patient Allocation Matrix (PAM) updates. PAM is an insights platform covering various LHD (local health districts), hospitals, and hospitals’ capacity to handle ambulances and patients. Similar resource allocation and logistic systems are found across many industries.

At the time, a lack of visibility hindered efficient management of resources within NSW Ambulance and NSW Health, impacting patient flow and delivery of care.

There was also a need to have a real-time view of the types or illnesses affecting the state, like percentage of COVID patients versus all other types or illnesses.

“The Patient Allocation Matrix gives NSW Ambulance a birds eye view of the state’s hospitals and emergency departments, allowing us to see surges in areas and allowing us to better allocate ambulances to provide a greater health system.”

The Approach:

NSW Ambulance and Avocado cooperated on implementing a comprehensive solution in response to the challenges faced. The first step was defining the unique requirements through collaborative dialogue and hand-drawn prototypes. Leveraging Avocado’s iterative methodology, the proposed system evolved rapidly, ensuring the solutions provided were tailored to NSW Ambulance’s needs and met deadlines.

NSW Ambulance was already using Splunk’s solutions. Avocados’ team of Splunk experts evolved the organisation’s use cases, ensuring it got full value from its Splunk investments. This involved leveraging Avocado’s Green Managed Services Model. The model empowers companies to optimise operational efficiency and resilience, including with the Splunk platform. Through the green model, companies and organisations tap into “Buckets of Days” to integrate certified Avocado professionals into their teams.

Avocado’s team collaborated with NSW Ambulance to develop innovative approaches. The team took advantage of Splunk’s ability to incorporate data from any source to generate more precise insights presented through the PAM platform. This robust system provides actionable insights, informs critical decision-making processes, and improves operations management.
