Custom software development

Build the right platform, the right way.

Overview

Avocado's software development consultancy builds, integrates and modernises business software for Australian enterprises and government agencies. Our onshore developers either join your teams or deliver as a complete team. With testing, security and observability engineered from the first sprint, what we build is ready to run in production.

Who do we build software for?

Built for complex, regulated environments

CIOs and heads of engineering in financial services, insurance, government, utilities and healthcare, where failed releases carry regulatory and reputational cost.

Teams running legacy or disconnected systems that need to integrate, scale or be replaced without disrupting operations.

Product owners who need more delivery capacity without the handoffs and time-zone gaps of offshore models.

Organisations whose delivery has stalled with a larger provider and need a team that can pick it up and finish it.

What are our consultancy services?

Six ways we build and improve software

Custom platform and application development

When off-the-shelf products fall short, we design and build custom platforms around your goals, from concept to code. Human-centred design keeps them usable; CI/CD and test-driven practices keep quality designed in.

Software and systems integration

Integration architectures, APIs and interfaces that connect legacy platforms, cloud services and third-party systems, with data validated and built to scale.

Application modernisation

We replatform and rearchitect ageing systems to run on modern cloud infrastructure with less technical debt, staged to keep critical services running.

Cloud-native development

Platforms designed for AWS and Microsoft Azure from the start, using containers, managed services and infrastructure as code, so they scale with demand.

Development teams and specialists

Individual specialists to strengthen your team, or a cohesive delivery team that owns an outcome end to end, drawing on our whole practice.

Software architecture and technical advisory

We review your architecture, codebase and delivery maturity to identify risk and set a clear roadmap before you invest in a build.

How does Avocado deliver software?

Built the way you'll run it

01

Assess

We confirm business outcomes and map your current systems, applications and dependencies.

02

Plan

We agree an architecture and delivery plan, including how quality, security and production visibility will be built in from the start.

03

Build and release

Agile sprints, CI/CD pipelines and test-driven development get working software in front of users early, with automated testing and security checks — including secrets and dependency scanning — in the pipeline.

04

Adopt and embed

We instrument applications for production visibility so issues are found before users find them. Documentation and knowledge transfer mean your team can run and extend what we built.

Because Avocado also runs Quality Engineering, Data and AI, DevSecOps and Observability practices, those disciplines are part of the build from day one, not added after go-live.

What languages, frameworks and tools do we use?

Modern enterprise stacks, certified

Our consultants work across modern enterprise stacks and hold current certifications in the tools they use.

What outcomes can you expect?

What you walk away with

Releases that are faster and safer, because testing and security run automatically in every pipeline.
Scalable solutions that carry minimal technical debt.
Systems that share accurate data, replacing manual workarounds between platforms.
An onshore team accountable for outcomes, with your data staying in Australia.
A team of your own that can run and extend the software after handover.
What's the proof?

Winning platforms for Australia's largest organisations

Avocado designed and delivered a quality solution that has met our business requirements, is scalable and carries minimal technical debt.

Delivered end to end

01

Six legacy systems replaced by one payments platform

A leading Australian financial services organisation ran payment and registry processes across ageing systems and spreadsheets — an operational and compliance risk for more than five years. Avocado designed, built and tested a new integrated payments and registry platform: 11 system integrations and 500 features from 2,500 user stories, tested through 2,000 QA test cases, five performance rounds, five UAT cycles and three parallel runs.

Our approach
  • Six legacy systems decommissioned.
  • On day one, more than 10,000 transactions processed and billions of dollars in payments settled.
  • Fewer manual errors and a central audit trail, with stronger AML/KYC compliance.
  • The client's team now runs the platform independently.

A secure supply chain platform, built lean

A supply chain mapping and workflow platform needed to scale with growth and meet enterprise and government security expectations, while running on a lean team. Avocado delivered it end to end — architecture and design through build and rollout — with small engineering pods and embedded automation testers. The cloud portal runs on desktop, tablet, iOS and Android, with role-based access control, asset and cargo tracking, configurable business rules and controls aligned to ISO 27001.

Our approach
  • A scalable, secure platform now used by large logistics organisations and government agencies.
  • Run on a lean operating model.

Common questions

What software development services does Avocado offer?

Avocado offers custom platform and application development, cloud-native development, software and systems integration, application modernisation, development team augmentation and software architecture advisory. We work mainly with enterprise and government organisations in regulated industries.

Is your software development done in Australia?

Yes. Avocado is Australian owned and operated, and our developers work onshore from Sydney and Melbourne, so your code and data stay in Australia.

Can you work with our existing team and tools?

Yes. Our developers can join your team using your tools and ways of working, or we can supply a complete team that integrates with your existing processes.

How is software development different from DevOps?

Software development builds the application. DevOps is the set of practices and automation that moves that code into production reliably. We do both, and our DevOps team builds the pipelines our developers use.

How do you make sure the software is secure?

Security checks run in the delivery pipeline from the first sprint, including secrets and dependency scanning. For a full secure development program, see our DevSecOps services.

Do you build AI applications?

Yes. AI agents, generative AI and machine learning builds are delivered by our Data and AI practice, with our developers handling integration into your existing systems.
